Antarctica is a continent in the southern hemisphere. All territorial claims south of the 60°S latitude are suspended under the Antarctic Treaty (₳|₩). The Antarctic Nations are the original twelve signatories of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959. Countries which had made territorial claims prior to the establishment of the Antarctic Treaty, maintain a measure of administration within their claim areas. However enforceable jurisdiction within these areas extends only to their own nationals, and all of Antarctica remains a scientific preserve set aside to uphold the freedom of scientific investigation.
