The Nebo Relay Mast Built in the 1960s, initially to relay ITV signals from the Preseli mast in Pembrokeshire SN1026, the mast located on a 971 feet high hill is itself a 1000 ft high. Nowadays, it transmits signals for BBC1 (Wales), BBC2 (Wales), ITV and the Welsh language channel, S4C. It also relays independent radio, including Classic FM and the Caernarfon based bi-lingual Champion 103 FM pop station, but not BBC radio which is transmitted from Llanddona SH5880. Overview[]

The Arfon transmitting station is a facility for FMDAB digital radio and television transmission near the villages of Nebo and Nasareth in Gwynedd, northwestern Wales (grid reference SH476493). It includes a 308.5 m (1,012 ft) guyed mast with antennas attached at various heights. The mast is surmounted by a television transmitting antenna, which brings the total height of the structure to 317.4 m (1,041 ft), making it the tallest structure in Wales. It is owned and operated by the firm Arqiva.

History[]

It was rumored since the late 1970s until the early 1990s that it was somehow connected to either the Wartime Broadcasting Service.

It was accused in the late 1970s of carrying secret government radio messages at or near to 100.5 MHz.

Coverage[]

It covers north east coast of Gwynedd, Holyhead and Anglesey. A few places around Dublin, Conwy and coastal parts of Ceredigion are accidentally covered as well. Sometimes it is also received at a low strength in coastal N.E. England, the north coast of Pembrokeshire and a few more places around Dublin in favorable weather conditions.
