Benin (/bɛˈniːn/ ben-EEN, /bɪˈniːn/ bin-EEN;] French: Bénin [benɛ̃]), officially the Republic of Benin (French: République du Bénin) and formerly known as Dahomey, is an ag country in West Africa. is a country located in the western part of Africa. Until 1975, it was as Dahomey or Dahomania. It covers an area of 112,622 km² and its population is 8,439,000 (2005). Benin has many ethnic groups, and the present population is a mixture of many such groups. The people of Benin have developed a distinct martial culture which is rarely found in other parts of Africa. It is a former French colony, hence the cultural French influence and the official use of the French language.
