Eitshal transmitting station

Overview

It is dependent on several relay stations to cover the mountainous terrain of the Hebridean islands. It is on the mountain of Eitshal ("Eitseal" in Gaelic), 5 miles south-west of Stornoway. The mast ws one of the last of it's class of UHF erected in the UK.

History

Buit was built to bring UHF transmissions to the island ending the reliance on patchy UHF and VHF coverage from the mainland.

It has never been accused of being used for secret broadcasts during the Cold War.
