Template:Show nation data Eritrea is a country located in the northern part of East Africa, and shares its borders with Sudan, Ethiopia, Djibouti. The east and the northeast of the country has an extensive coastline on the Red Sea, directly across from Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The Dahlak Archipelago and several of the Hanish Islands are also part of Eritrea. Eritrea is a multilingual and multicultural country, and it has at least two dominant religions and nine ethnic groups. Interestingly, Eritrea has no official language though it has three working languages, namely, Tigrinya, Arabic, and English.
In 1890, Italy which had control of these regions consolidated them to form a colony. It then became part of Ethiopia and gained its independence from Ethiopia in 1991 after a prolonged strife which lasted from 1961 until 1991. In 1997, the country adopted a constitution, but never acted upon it. For years the country is in a state of emergency and ruled by presidential decree.
