Background[]

The USA wanted to find out if it had fully prepared for an Eastern Bloc invasion of Western Europe and the losses incurred by such an invasion.

Name[]

Fallex 62= Fall (Autumn) [NATO] Exercise.

There were held annually by NATO in the 1960s and early 1970s.

Scenario[]

It was supposed that a new nationalistic and politicly hardline claque had suddenly taken over in the USSR, demanded that W. Germany had to disarm and when they did not, invaded them.

The death toll and material losses[]

10-15m W. German deaths.
The near total destruction of W. Germany's industry.
East Anglia would be a Z-zone and thus abandoned as worthless due to war damage and later atomic fallout.
Portugal and Spain would have survived, but would be heavily irradiated.

Exposure[]

West Germany's Der Spiegel newspaper exposed it on 10\09\62 in what became known as the The Der Spiegel affair of 1962 (German: Spiegel-Affäre).

The Warsaw Pacts sim-war[]

A Warsaw Pact simulated European war exercise, held in 1972, terrified the Soviet general staff when completed. 8m Soviet dead, 85% of Soviet industrial capacity destroyed, 99.99% military losses, East Germany largely destroyed and the European part of the USSR becoming an uninhabitable wasteland (inevitably leading to many more deaths).
