Overview

Fenny Compton railway station was a railway station serving Fenny Compton in Warwickshire, England, that was closed during the Beaching Cuts.

History

GWR

Fenny Compton Railway Station opened in 1852 with trains going to and from Banbury to Birmingham. By 1889 it was finally laid to standard gauge.

SMJR\LMS

Fenny Compton West railway station opened next to it in 1871 with trains going to and from Byfield to Stratford.

BR

The station and busy junction were not damaged in WW2. The passenger services to Kineton, Ettington and Stratford-upon-Avon (Town) were withdrawn on 7th April 1952, although through traffic and freight services continued to gain access to the Great Western Railway at Fenny Compton until it's closure on 5th July 1965.

British Railways ended passenger use of Fenny Compton West railway in 1952 andms remained and were cleared in the late 1960s. The branch line platform was cut back in the 1970s and became a small freight halt and later the mainline side was partly patched up to be used by charter trains and railway maintenance crews.

The up platform was removed and several inter-connecting lines were installed leading up to the station to allow through goods traffic, since LMS had found it a usefull frieght route, but alas the line was closed as a through route in 1965.

Life today

A small section of the Stratford-upon-Avon line remains as a freight branch line leading to the MoD Kineton Military Railway in southern Warwickshire. It was was transferred to the Ministry of Defence on 19 July 1971, and is worked by them with their own locomotives and crews.
