7. ET-MP Grenade The United States hadn't used a concussion grenade (or a grenade that is designed to damage a target only using explosive power) since 1975 when the military decommissioned the MK3A2 because of an asbestos hazard. Starting in 2011, Picatinny Arsenal began developing the Enhanced Tactical Multi-Purpose grenade, a new age weapon that gives the user the option to use the explosive as either a concussion or a fragmentation device with just the flip of a switch. The weapon is also ambidextrous whereas current models require a special arming procedure for lefties. Though not currently in service, the plan is to transition the new grenades into action by 2020.
6. Mini Nuclear Reactors The South China Morning Post stated in a recent report that the country is developing small nuclear reactors and are hopeful that they will be in use within the next five years. The Chinese military, who would presumably use the reactors to power military installments on remote islands, has partially funded the project. Called hedianbao, the units have some amazing capabilities. At 20 feet long and a little over eight feet tall the reactors are small enough to fit in a shipping container but don’t let their size fool you, they pack quite a punch. The hedianbao generate 10 megawatts of energy, which is enough to power 50,000 households without needing to be refueled for decades.
5. Lun-class Ekranoplan This massive flying ship makes an indelible impression on anyone that sees it in person. The only version ever built was designed in the Soviet Union in the 1980’s and was used by the Soviet and later Russian navies from 1987 to the late 1990’s. This remarkable piece of machinery comes equipped with eight turbojet engines that each generate 28,600 lbf of thrust. The Lun is also combat ready with 6 Moskitcruise missiles, 4 of which are capable of sinking any vessel in existence. Today the craft sits unused and rusting at a naval base in Kaspiysk.
4. HELLADS Putting lasers on things can be a difficult and sometimes impossible task. Dr. Evil wanted (frickin’) laser beams attached to the heads of his sharks and he never got his wish. Luckily it seems that the Air Force’s dreams of having lasers small enough to attach to their planes is only a difficult prospect, but not impossible. Military contractor General Atomics is developing powerful lasers that will be small enough to mount on fighter planes. The Air Force hope to have the lasers on military aircraft by 2020.
3. Invisibility Cloak While we are unfortunately not a part of the world behind Platform 9 and ¾, British troops are doing their best to bring a small part of the world of Harry Potter into real life. During trials which took place in the United States, a battalion of British troops employed an advanced camouflage sheeting called Vatec. The remarkable sheet made the user undetectable, not only by the human eye but from infrared and heat-seeking devices as well. British soldiers were very impressed with the sheets after testing them and recommended that the military should buy the camouflage equipment.

Meshworm Researchers from Harvard, MIT, and South Korea’s Seoul National University combined their considerable intelligence to come up with Meshworm, a penny-sized robot made entirely of synthetic fibrous material that mimics the movements and actions of an earthworm. While it’s capable of recording the temperature of a small room and audio, Meshworms indestructible nature is one of its most impressive attributes. When tested, the robot was capable of withstanding being stepped on and repeatedly pounded with a hammer, while still being able to crawl away completely unharmed. Researchers speculate that the shape-changing artificial muscles found in Meshworm will be utilized in cell phones and portable devices shortly.

Graphene It is the thinnest substance ever discovered at one atom thick, the lightest material known to man with one square meter weighing around three-quarters of a milligram, the strongest material on earth and the best conductor of both electricity and heat at room temperature. Researchers are beyond excited about the substance, hailing it as the material that will lead to some of the greatest human achievements. Graphene Military Labs was recently created to research and apply graphene for military use. This research could lead to a new generation of lightweight batteries that charge in minutes and last much longer than current batteries. A patch of graphene could be designed to allow soldiers to know if an area is contaminated with even an acutely low amount of radiation. Researchers also hope to develop a touchpad that could be rolled up like a scroll using the wonder material.
