Overview[]

The Mobira Cityman 900 was released in 1987 by Nokia-Mobira. It was one of the first compact phones, when compared to earlier models. The nickname of the phone in Finland was "Gorba". This was because the president of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev used a Cityman 900 (presented to him) to call Moscow during a Helsinki press conference in October 1987.

The event[]

Nokia's mobile phones got a major publicity boost in 1987, when Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev was pictured using a Nokia Mobira Cityman mobile phone to call from Helsinki to his communications minister in Moscow. This led to the phone being nicknamed of the "Gorba" in 1988, which was the Finnish nickname for him, like "Gorby" was in English.
