Gyula Varadi (Budapest, 1921-1 July 2003) member of the Hungarian army, took part in the 1956 revolution.
In his youth he became a member of the illegitimate KMP: he was arrested in 1943 and sentenced to one and a half years in prison. In 1945 he became a member of the Communist Party.
He first graduated from the Kossuth and then from the Zrínyi Miklós Military Academy. From 1948 he was commander of the Tata Armored Officer School, and from 1950 he became Major General of the Ministry of Defense. In 1952 he completed the Vorosilov Military Academy course.
After the outbreak of the revolution, he became a member of the Revolutionary Defense Commission, acting as a liaison between the government and the insurgents in this capacity, negotiating with Corvin insurgents like Soviet military commanders.
After the revolution was supressed, he was arrested in 1957, then in 1958, sentenced with Lieutenant Colonel Istvan Marián,and other FHB leaders for seven years.
In 1960 he was freed under the amnestey, then became a casting worker. After the change of regime, in 1990 he was elected president of the Military Section of the Committee on Historical Justice.
