Monarchy[]

In 1795, Hawaii got its independence from the United Kingdom. It became an absolute monarchy, and a constitutional one in 1840. In 1893, the government was overthrown by the United States. The last monarch, Lili'uokalini, lived in the United States until her death in 1917.
