Civil and military transatlantic civilian flights used the air base for refuelling in the 1950s, but this gradually fell off in the 1960s as airliners gained greater flight range. By this time it had non the less become the hub of Greenland's national air traffic a so became a de facto joint military/civil airport run by the USAF until it was old off in 1992.
