OverviewEdit

The 2 principal housing block is also known as Lavatrici (washing machines), because of the concrete slabs with empty circles cut in them that characterise the façades of its buildings. It was erected between 1980 and 1990. 438 of 688 apartments belong to the municipality and are used as it's council housing.

Planning philosophyEdit

The plans usedEdit

A weird modernist plan that made it look like a pile of abandoned washing-machines.

The eventEdit

It was deemed to be one of the nations ugliest buildings. The uninsulated laminated steel windows were draughty, heaters were too expensive due to inefficacy and the roof leaked.

The 2015-17 eco-refitEdit

A new rooftop photovoltaic plant and new heat sensors will efficiently power the stairway air conditioning, stairway heaters, lifts and the stairway lighting. Double-glazed, PVC window-frames were also used. The work on 162 apartments was performed under the European project R2CITIES.
