Overview[]

The American army's Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, or M.A.S.H. units were initially called Auxiliary Surgical Groups in WW2 and were a rudimentary 60 bed mobile hospital that was an attempt to move surgical care closer to wounded soldiers than the traditional fixed position field hospitals were use at the time.

The 2006 successor to the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital is the Combat Support Hospital.

A a result of prompt medical care less patients were dying within the “Golden Hour”.

  1. Napoleonic war- Trier/triage teams.
  2. WW1- American Expeditionary Force Mobile Hospital No.1.
  3. WW2- Auxiliary Surgical Groups
  4. Cold War- Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals (M.A.S.H. units).
    1. Vietnam War- Medical Unit, Self-Contained, Transportable (M.U.S.T.) units.
  5. 2006- to date Combat Support Hospitals.

Popular culture[]

A book, film, play and TV sitcom were amongst the many things that have bin created in the American world of entertainment about these units' service in the 1950–1953 Korean War.
