The distances[]

The road distance from Quito to northern border town of Túlcan, via the town of Ibarra, is 116Km in one direction and 104Km in the other way by road (assumedly it's a loop road with unequal legs, not just a single highway).

The flight's distance is 135 kilometers, 83 miles or 72 nautical miles.

The road[]

Before it was paved[]

The road was only a dirt road outside Quito, Ibarra and Túlcan.

After it was paved[]

President Guillermo Rodriguez ordered it's paving in the early to mid 1970s. It is now fully tarmacked.
