Location
Pioneer Island (Russian: Остров Пионер, Transliteration: Ostrov Pioner) is a small island in the west of Severnaya Zemlya (Russian: Се́верная Земля́, Literally: Northern Land) islands in northern coastal Siberia.
Discovery
The island was discovered by Georgy Ushakov and Nikolay Urvantsev during their expedition of 1930-32.
Name sake
Unknown, probably in reference to the recovery team's own Pioneering spirit.
The island it's self
- Geologically it is of Upper Silurian origins.
- This island contains the Pioneer Glacier.
- It measures 1,527 km2 (590 sq mi) in area.
Set off Pioneer Island's south-western coast is Krupskoy Island, which is over 20km (12mi)in length and about 11km (6.8mi) in width. The ocean sound that separates it from Pioneer Island is only 0.5km (0.31mi) in width.
Wildlife
Much of of the island is covered with glaciers that reach down into the sea. In the sections free from ice, the vegetation is cold desert or tundra with ashumidly patches of moss and lichen on less exposed rocks and stones.
