In the UK Her Majesty's Secretary of State for Housing and Urban Development (Housing Minister) is the member of the cabinet responsible for the former British Department for Housing and Urban Development.

The former office was a British Cabinet level position.

It was formed as the Ministry of Local Government and Planning, in January 1951 when the Ministry of Health was split off, and the Local Government Board and Ministry of Town and Country Planning, which had been created in 1943, were merged. A Secretary of State for Housing had been created at a non-cabinet level during 1945 in order to deal with all the bombed out families after World War 2. It was then merged into the Ministry of Transport to form the Department for the Environment, in 1970.

It is still used in many nations, including Egypt, the Maldives, USA and Australia's Victoria State.

Egypt's one was Mostafa Madbouli (as of ?\?\2014), America's one Ben Carson (as of March 2, 2017), Victoria's one was Martin Foley (as of ?/?/2014) and The Maldives's one was Dr. Mohamed Muizzu (as of ?\?\2014).

Responsibilities included (in Egypt), according to presidential decree No. 164/ 1996, some of the roles of the ministry include:
  1. Prepare plans for urban development
  2. Supervise towns and villages planning and housing projects proceed in accordance with the policies of the state
  3. Prepare building plans for public utilities, such as drinking water and sanitation, and oversee and follow-up throughout the design and implementation phases
  4. Prepare comprehensive regional building plans, prioritizing economic and social benefits to the Egyptian people
  5. Work in the development of new cities and villages
  6. Follow best practices, by staying up to date with the latest technical and applied research in the area of Housing, Utilities and Urban Development
  7. Develop designs required for the building of public housing, and propose public policy for housing maintenance
  8. Work with Arab country investors and other foreign investors
  9. Work in cooperation with other ministries, agencies and stakeholders
