Their name[]

The term OKB is a transliteration of the Russian initials of "Опытное конструкторское бюро" – Opytnoye Konstruktorskoye Buro, meaning: The "Experimental Design Bureau".

Their function[]

The OKBs were closed organisations and politicly monitored Soviet institutions working on design and prototyping of advanced technology, usually for military applications. They were meant to do the designing, testing, publicity/propaganda and proto-type production work, not the post-testing mass production work tat was in fact done by politicly trustworthy factories else-were. Some were made under license in places like Poland, Cuba, E. Germany, Czechoslovakia, and China amongst others.

Names[]

Many were named after there founder, who some times was so awesome and/or famous it stayed in-suite after his death or purging.

The Antonov company was established in 1946 in Novosibirsk as a top-secret Soviet Research and Design Bureau No. 153, headed by Oleg Antonov and specialised in turboprop military transport aircraft. It made great strides in cargo aircraft and engine design over the years.

The Sukhoi Company (JSC) was founded by Pavel Sukhoi in 1939 as the Sukhoi Design Bureau (OKB-51, design office prefix Su). It was major Russian manufacturer and designer of both civilian and military aircraft. It was head-quartered in Begovoy District, Northern Administrative Okrug, Moscow.

Fate[]

Most were sold off in the 1990s. A few of the reset were sold off in the early 2000s. Mergers and buyouts occurred in the late 1990s and early 2000s. A few went broke in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
