The Steyr Scout RFR (code-named "Cub Scout" during development) is a straight-pull bolt action rifle designed for civilian use, whether for hunting trips or shooting at the range. It comes in three different calibers; .22 LR, .17 HMR, and .22 WMR.
History[]
The weapon was first showcased at the IWA 2016 Fair in Germany. It then made its stateside debut at the NRA Annual Meetings in Atlanta, Georgia in April of 2017.
Design Details[]
Emulating the look and feel of the original Scout rifle on a rimfire platform, the Scout RFR is designed from the ground up to be a economical, minimal-recoil Scout rifle trainer.
The weapon, based in design on the ISSC SPA biathlon rifle, features a straight-pull toggle lock action. Coupled with short, small-caliber rimfire cartridges, this makes for an particularly quick manual action. Another advantageous aspect of the toggle lock is that the bolt does not protrude backwards of the receiver during the cycling process.
The Scout RFR also features a polymer stock with a 30-slot Picatinny rail along the barrel for forward-mounted optics, along with a 3/8" dovetail base also running along the topside of the receiver. A set of Weaver bases are also included for mounting conventional scopes.
The stock also uses the standard SBS/Scout buttplate spacers, which can be swapped in or out for adjusting the length of pull. An optional knife with a sheath and mounting bracket can also be stored inside the stock.
The rifle boasts a 20" heavy barrel secured to an Eloxal-coated aluminum receiver. In the .22 LR and .17 HMR models of the weapon, it features 1/2-20 UNF threading for the user's choice of attachments. The threading is not included in the .22 WMR model.
Ammunition is fed into the weapon from a 10-round detachable magazine.
The weapon also features an ambidextrous safety mechanism in the trigger guard.
