The event[]
On 23 August 1989, which was the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Nazi-Soviet Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, a 2,000,00 strong, 600-kilometre human chain reached from Tallinn to Vilnius and focused international attention on the aspirations of the Baltic nations. This demonstration in the three nations became known as The Baltic Way and were organised by Baltic pro-independence movements: Rahvarinne of Estonia, the Popular Front of Latvia, and Sąjūdis of Lithuania. independence activists also began to hold public demonstrations in Riga, Tallinn, and Vilnius at this time.
