Namesake[]

The Order of Lenin Medal (Russian: Орден Ленина, Orden Lenina) was  created in 1930 and named after the Bolshevik leader and founder of the USSR, Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, alias- "Lenin".

Criteria for issuing[]

The Order of Lenin is the the highest decoration bestowed by the Soviet Union. To get it one had to be-

  • Civilians for outstanding services rendered to the State.
  • Members of the armed forces for exemplary service.
  • Those who promoted friendship and cooperation between peoples and in strengthening peace.
  • Those with meritorious services to the Soviet state and society.

A famous recipient[]

As a reward for creating this much needed Yakovlev Yak-1 fighter aircraft, the designer; Alexander Yakovlev was awarded with- The Order of Lenin, a 100,000 Rouble prize, plus a Zis motor car.

The legendary helicopter designer Mikhail Mil also got it 3 times.

The fictitious British secret agent James Bond (007) received one off of the Soviet KGB head, General Anatoli Gogol, in the film A View to a Kill.
