Scenario[]
War is not fun, but a tragedy!
After several years of rising geopolitical, military and diplomatic East-West tension and paranoia, the the Soviets decided to activate there brand new Seven days to the River Rhine (1979) on the 1st of November of that year. Both sides aimed forces were already on high alert and increasing in strength in both Europe and Korea. Nukes were considered by both sides, but not used on mass. It was reckoned the best tactic was to use only to uses a few tactical nukes since killing the world with strategic nukes made absolutely no strategic sense at all! Denmark, Austria, the BENELUX states, Niehuus, Carlsbjerg, Wassersleben, Kupfermühle, Bitburg, Treves, Prüm, Mützenich, Roetgen, Emden, Kleve, Zweibrücken, Aachen, Speyer, Pirmasens, Ludwigshafen, Oberallgäu Landkreis, Baden-Württemberg and the Saarland remained unconquered.
The Almegårds Kaserne on Bornholm island was destroyed by the Soviets and the Danish III Reconnaissance Battalion (III/GHR) from the Guard Hussar Regiment was crushed by the joint E. German, Polish and Soviet assault on the Island on December 7th 1979, ending in a 2 year Soviet post war occupation of the Island. E. Germany hands Vejrö Island back to Denmark in 1994. Hungary and Czechoslovakia also give Geras, Ebreichsdorf, Burgenland back to Austria at the same time. Both the Rheinland and Oberbayern are now a sparsely populated and devastated neutral zones.
The war lasted between November 1st 1979 and October 12th 1983. 12,479,500 (12,245,475 were civvies) W. Germans, 327,500 Soviets, 175,000 (125,000 were civvies) Austrians, 167,000 (100,000 civvies) Poles, 157,000 (100,000 were civvies) E. Germans, 152,000 (90,000 were civvies) Dutch, 150,000 (60,000 civvies) French, 127,000 (33,500 were civvies), 58,000 (112,500 civvies) Belgians, British, 100,000 (37,500 civvies) Italians, 66,000 (26,000 were civvies) Czechoslovakians, 50,000 (5,500 were civvies) Hungarians, 47,750 Americans, 27,500 (10,000 civvies) Danes, 20,000 (6,000 were civvies) Turks, 15,000 (5,000 were civvies) Greeks, 12,500 Canadians, 12,500 (4,500 were civvies) Bulgarians, 7,550 (of which 2,500 were civvies) Luxembourgers, 5,750 Norwegians, 2,550, Romanians, 2,500 Spanish, 257 Portuguese and 12 Maltese died in the war! Yes, 14,260,594 (12,960,975 of whom were civvies) lives were wasted in this stupid war!
Turkey, Greece and Cyprus also had a brief clash with Romania, Iran, Syria, Bulgaria and the USSR in which 7,000 Iranians, 6,000 Soviets, 5,000 Syrians, 5,000 Turks, 2,000 Greeks, 500 Cypriots, 300 Bulgarians and 100 Romanians died.
An equally brutal conflict broke out in the Korean Peninsular, between November 2st 1979 and October 17th 1983 that saw the deaths of 7,500,000 (6,000,000 were civvies) S. Koreans, 1,500,000 (1,000,000 were civvies) Japanese, 23,000 Thai, 22,000 Philopenas, 22,000 Taiwanese and 10,000 Americans. It ended with the collapse of S. Korea outside the Japanese held "2nd Busan Perimeter" pocket and Jeju Island. The communist bloc nations suffered similar losses in the 2nd Korean War wars. N. Korean and Soviet war crimes were every wear on mass in both theatres of war.
A Cuba patrol boat was also sunk loitering with intent of the coast Miami on May 1st, 1982.
Casus belli[]
The Soviet's claimed they were avenging the supposed West German bombing of a Interflug passenger jet over the Bosnian SR in Yugoslavia on May 1st, 1979. All 40 people and 6 crew died instantly. The real cause was a Soviet deep state bomb! Erich Honecker fell for the trick, but wanted a Stazi investigation in to it, while Tito called for an Interpol investigation in to it due to his fears that may have been a PLO attack, but the Soviets pushed for the war they wanted so badly. The UK, W. Germany, Sweden, France, Switzerland and Algeria tried to resolve the situation at the UN and supported Yugoslavia's plans in the UN an Interpol. Sadly, the American deep sate sat back and gloated over the bombing since they found the deaths of those innocent East Germans amusing. Neither the USSR or America showed no sympathy for the victims at the UN or Interpol to Yugoslavia's and East Germany's disgust.

Refugee deaths[]
It is reckoned that broken sewers and water mains after a conventional or atomic war would cause cholera, typhoid, typhus and paratyphoid epidemics in refuge camps and ruined cities. Refugee camps and ruined cities in the Western World and the more civilised parts of the Eastern Bloc like East Germany, Moscow and Tallinn would not get cholera, typhoid, typhus and paratyphoid epidemics after a 1981 East-West war since it was eradicated between the 1890 to 1970s depending on the location in question. As a result rickettsia prowazekii, rickettsia typhi, Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica/Salmonella typhi, and vibrio cholerae would be extinct in those places. That said, poor hygiene will case a different type of hell in the refugee camps as every one gets the sh*ts! The the common cold and influenza would also run rife in poor living conditions.
- The common place bacteria enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), Cryptosporidium a, Campylobacter and Escherichia coli O157:H7 would cause severe illnesses across the camps. Transmission would be via the faecal–oral route or through the distribution and eventual eating of contaminated raw leaf green vegetables, undercooked meat and raw milk.
- Listeria would thrive in in uncooked meats, uncooked vegetables, fruits including cantaloupe and apples, pasteurized or unpasteurized milk and milk products, and processed foods.
- Salmonella enterica (formerly Salmonella choleraesuis) would thrive in raw chicken eggs and goose eggs, initially in the egg whites, although most eggs are not infected. As the egg ages at room temperature, the yolk membrane begins to break down and can spread into the yolk.
- Botulism would thrive on fish that has been pickled without the salinity or acidity of brine that contains acetic acid and high sodium levels, as well as smoked fish stored at too high a temperature and improperly canned food.
- The common place Norovirus, also known as Norwalk virus and sometimes referred to as the winter vomiting disease, is the most common cause of gastroenteritis. It is spread by The virus is usually spread by the faecal–oral route. This may be through contaminated food or water or person-to-person contact.
- The common place Rotavirus is spread by The virus is usually spread by the faecal–oral route. In addition to its impact on human health, rotavirus also infects other animals, and is a pathogen of livestock.
- Helicobacter pylori, previously known as Campylobacter pylori would cause gastritis via the fecal–oral route.
- The Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, hepatitis D and hepatitis E would cause hepatitis via the fecal–oral route, poor hygiene and by the spreading of bobbly fluids.
American betrayal and Soviet war crimes?[]
No doubt Soviet artillery barrages, MLRS barrages and endless human wave attack would cause heavy losses on both sides.
Russians would no doubt use Ukrainians and Belorussian cannon fodder. The Russians would have probably poisoned the water supply of Aachen if the got the chance to. Most Soviet dead would be non-ethnic Russians doing there job as incompetent Russian troops and\or cowardly Russian commanders driving non ethnic Russians forward at gun point.
No doubt the USA would have caved in and abandoned both it's allies and it's troops in Western Europe once the war looked lost and capitulated to the USSR even if the UK and France had already devastated the USSR with nukes earlyer. Any Americans that stood there ground would have found ego an indoctrination would be no defence. The American troops would probably have fled on mass as well, unlike the Soviets who would have fought on mass, leaving a trail of death and war crimes in there wake. The ungrateful USSR would have treated the remnant of the National People's Army (German: Nationale Volksarmee) like sh*t and the ungrateful USA would have treated remnant of the West German armed forces (German: Bundeswehr) like sh*t, despite most of the deaths benign W. Germany and E. Germany.
This could have been!!![]
A WW3 war memorial to W. Germany.
The ruins to the east of the small Anglo-French held "Aachen Free Zone".
A war in the late 1970s or early 1980s may have stayed conventional, but large parts of Europe, the Middle East and the Korea Peninsular were doomed to annihilation anyway!
- The hypothetical epitaph reads in English, then in German
- Blow out, you bugles, over the rich dead.
- There are none of these so lonely and poor of old,
- But dying has made us rarer gifts than gold.
- They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.
- Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
- At the going down of the sun and in the morning
- We will remember them.
- West Germany gave everything to save Europe,
- but the Americans ran away!
- One day West Germany will be avenged!
The Americans still mock the sacrifices others made, but a 1984 UK school playground chant said it all: "East Germans are red, West Germans are blue – America ran away, but Europe stood true!"
A 1990's E. German air force slang phrase "Das Jüterbog-Flugplatz-Syndrom" (The Jüterbog Airfield syndrome) meant a complete and utter failure or defeat of one's own making.
A 1990's E. German army slang phrase "Sowjetisches Versagen" (Soviet failure) meant a complete and utter failure or defeat of one's own making.
A 1990's Polish medical slang phrase "Niepowodzenie Związku Radzieckiego" (Soviet failure) meant having a still birth still birth.
A popular 2010's Saarland internet meme showed a gunsight's crosshairs superimposed over a W. German soldier's back with the words "Amerika verrät alle!" (America is betraying everyone!) written under it.
The 2010's French slag term "L'échec Américain" (American failure) was a alternate for an act of betrayal, fratricide and/or cowardice.
The Baden-Württemberg Free State politician and ex-tennis pro, Boris Franz Becker, told a journalist from the UK's ITN TV news service on March 9th, 2012: "The Americans betrayed us! Europe did the fighting, West Germany did the dying and America ran away!".
