United Nations Security Council resolution 496, adopted unanimously on 15 December 1981, after the UN representative of the Seychelles, Glovanella Gonthier, accused S. Africa of a war of aggression and that "every reason to believe that South Africa might have been involved in the aggression". It slammed the November 1981 coup attempt in the Seychelles by foreign mercenaries, including the British thug for higher- Mike Hoare and his team of 40 armed men, allegedly backed by South Africa, and the subsequent hijacking of an Air India plane.
