United Nations Security Council Resolution 5, adopted on May 8, 1946, deferred the decisions on Soviet troops in Iran pending a report on the situation. The Republic of Mahabad and Azerbaijan People's Government were abandoned by the USSR in 1946 and soon collapsed.
