Overview[]
One of the test reactors at the Vinča Nuclear Institute had reactor a criticality accident on 15 October 1958.
6 workers were heavily irradiated by a ozone cloud, killing one and injuring 5. The ozone cloud was probably not contained and escaped. The survivors received bone marrow transplants in Europe, in a French hospital. 1 received the first ever bone marrow transplants from a biologically unrelated person in Europe.
It did not officially have a INES rateing, but probably was a Level 4 INES Scale event.
