The WG-66 is an East German submachine gun developed in the mid 1960s.

Development

The WG-66 began development in competition with the PM-63 and the vz. 61 in 1966. After sets of trials, the WG-66 was deemed the best, but the most expensive. Many ventures were undertaken to reduce the price of production but ultimately the imported alternatives were cheaper and didn't require industry to be coordinated to produce a new firearm on a large scale (supposedly a production of 300,000 WG-66 was planned).

A project to reduce the production price down to 330 marks was undertaken. This design would have been chambered for 9x18mm PM, but the proposal wasn't taken seriously and the WG-66 development ended with the adoption of foreign submachine guns.
