Overview[]

World War 2 was the worst conflict in human history both in terms of lives lost and devastation. Its conclusion directly brought about the Cold War.

Precipitating Events[]

Japan had annexed Korea in 1910 and invaded China's Manchuria province in 1931 formally announcing there plan to annex most of north western and coastal China. The western nations had suspected Japan wanted to do it because Japan had been attacking China sporadically since 1894, no one did anything apart from a belated oil embargo from the US.

In 1934 Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party assumed total rule of Germany. Hitler began to undo the Treaty of Versailles by setting up the Luftwaffe (German Air force) Taking over the Rhine and conscripting men to his army. All the time, the Allies (France and the UK) did nothing.

After rejecting all diplomatic options and arbitration offers, the Italy invaded Ethiopia on October 3, 1935 and no one care a shit about it.

In 1938 Hitler's army marched straight into Austria and annexed Austria. Then he wanted to annex the Sudetenland (area of Czechoslovakia with many Germans). He also made an alliance with Fascist Italy. The Allies gave Hitler the Sudetenland as long as he promised not to invade Czechoslovakia. Then he invaded the rest of Czechoslovakia.

The USSR and Japan did clashed at the 1939 Battles of Khalkhin Gol.

Hitler wanted to continue his advance eastward by invading Poland. Now the Allies finally decided to declare war on Germany if they invaded Poland. Hitler made a nonaggression pact with Stalin and the USSR. This alliance stunned the Allies. On September 1st, 1939 German troops entered Poland, and Britain and France declared war on Germany, starting WW2.

Early WW2[]

After Germany and the USSR split Poland, a period called the Phoney War happened. Then, the USSR attacked Finland and they were forced to give a lot of territory to the USSR. Germany was getting iron ore through Sweden, so the UK asked Sweden to stop exporting iron ore to Germany. The UK thought they could trick Sweden by pretending to help Finland against the USSR but they would just take control of their iron fields. Sweden still said no. The UK mined the waters around and attacked a German tanker.

Hitler realized what the UK was doing so he moved to secure his supply of iron ore. He launched an invasion through Denmark into Norway. The Allies rushed troops to Norway, but Germany had taken control of Norway's airfields, and their air superiority decided the fight. Norway surrendered and the Allies had to retreat.

The Soviet Union war against Finland should have been an easy victory, but it became a struggle and their military weakness was in display. They forced the Finnish to sue for piece. Then they annexed the Baltic states and part of Northern Romania.

Germany was looking for another Alliance so Japan joined them. Japan had taken over Northern China. Japan was trying to build an empire, so they annexed Korea . Then they went to Manchuria and blew up one of their own trains to invade Manchuria.

Blitzkrieg[]

Germany's plan was to invade France, defeat France and the UK in the process, then turn on the USSR and win the war. Hitler turned towards France. France had impenetrable defenses along its German border. Germany decided to go around them, through Belgium .

The Allies rushed into Belgium at full speed to meet the German invasion head-on. This time, Hitler had a trick up his sleeve: Blitzkrieg. As the Germans advanced, they sent thousands of refugees westward slowing down the Allies

. To the South, the French left the Ardennes a area full of forests under defended because they thought it was naturally impenetrable. The Germans smashed 50 divisions through the Ardennes and encircled the French troops at lightning speed. The Allies were now trapped. The Germans squeezed in through all sides, taking out France's best armies and almost the British too. They made a desperate escape at Dunkirk. With most of Frances forces depleted, the Germans breezed through taking Paris and France fell.

Germany then decided to invade Britain. Before German troops could land, they would naval and air firmly across the English Channel. Tye Luftwaffe first attacked British ports and coastal facilities. Then it attacked RAF bases, crippling the RAFs ability to defend the nation. The British then ordered a small bombing raid over Berlin. Germany was furious and refocused attacks on London. The RAF was able to reorganize. Then the Luftwaffe sent a massive all-out attack on London, and the RAF successfully repelled it destroying many German aircraft and placing air superiority firmly in British hands. The UK could have been invaded if the RAF had been defeated, but all the stats would be against them and Germany would have lost, all be it at great cost to the UK.

Japan had exchanged gunfire with Chinese troops at the Marco Polo Bridge. This gave Japan another excuse to launch an invasion against China. They swept through Beijing and Shanghai, and advanced though the Yangtze Valley to China's the capital, Nanking. This is where the worst of Japans atrocities took place against the Chinese civilians.
